Volunteer at Storymakers
Be part of the story behind the stories
The Storymakers Conference is run entirely by volunteers, writers just like you who also have books to write. Our committee has been working hard since last year’s conference to bring this year’s event to life. When you volunteer, you become part of the community that makes Storymakers possible. We need volunteers who are willing to share their time, talents, and enthusiasm to help create the welcoming, inspiring experience that makes Storymakers special, and we would love for you to be part of it!
Whether you love meeting new people, keeping things organized, answering questions, or helping behind the scenes, there’s a place for you on our volunteer team.
You don’t have to be an expert. You just have to be willing to help

Conference Guide
Welcome 2-4 first-time attendees assigned to you. You’ll correspond online before the conference and then meet in person at the short orientation held directly before the opening ceremony. As a fun perk, you’ll have a genre-based reserved table in the ballroom where you can sit together during group sessions and lunch. Being a friendly, familiar face can help make everyone’s Storymakers experience a great one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXzM3c50Hrg
Packet Stuffing
Help prepare registration bags before the conference by assembling materials, alphabetizing name badges, and getting everything ready for attendees. It’s a great behind-the-scenes opportunity to help things run smoothly and it’s a lot of fun. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9JASojMRMVo

Help writers make the most of their critique partner match-up by keeping track of time and signaling when it’s time to rotate. Agents & Editors Table
Assist with the agents and editors table, helping keep things organized by checking in attendees, pumping them up for their pitches, and letting them know when it’s their turn to present. Volunteer FAQs
Do I need to be an experienced volunteer?
Not at all! Storymakers is a community of writers helping writers, and we’re happy to welcome volunteers of all experience levels. Whether you’ve volunteered for years or this is your first time, there’s a place and need for you. Some roles require specific skills, but many simply need someone who’s friendly, willing to help, and ready to be part of the team.
Do I have to be registered for the conference to volunteer?
For most positions, registration at the conference is required. For pre-registration activities such as packet stuffing, exceptions may be allowed.
Can I choose which volunteer job I do?
Absolutely! We encourage you to explore the opportunities and choose a role that fits your interests, skills, and availability. We’ll do our best to match volunteers with their preferred opportunities.
How much time will I need to commit?
The time commitment depends on the role. Some opportunities involve preparing before the conference, while others take place during specific sessions or events. Check the individual role descriptions and sign-up information for available shifts and time commitments. Typically, you’ll be giving an hour or two of your time.
Can I attend classes and other conference events while volunteering?
It depends on what you’re doing. Registration and pre-conference duties won’t interfere with classes. We need lots of room hosts, so that’s a great way to help and attend a class you were already planning on. Our slots for desk duties are flexible. The good news is there’s no FOMO because you can always watch the class virtually.
Are there any perks for volunteering?
Volunteering is a wonderful way to meet other writers, build friendships, network, and help create the Storymakers experience we all love. Some opportunities may also include special perks such as a nifty badge ribbon, meeting the guest lecturers, interacting with agents and editors, or special book-signing privileges.
What if I’m a first-time Storymakers attendee?
Welcome! You don’t have to be a Storymakers veteran to volunteer. In fact, volunteering can be a great way to meet people and feel connected to the community. If you’re attending for the first time, consider getting a Conference Guide, so you’ll understand what they do. It’s the only position you can’t do as a first-timer.
Will I receive training or instructions?
You’ll receive information about your volunteer role so you know what to expect. Some positions have additional instructions or preparation, such as being a Conference Guide. If the role you choose needs explanation, there will be training. We also have videos explaining more about the responsibilities of each role.
How do I sign up?
Choose the volunteer opportunity that interests you and click the Sign Up to Volunteer link during registration. There will be additional calls for help as the conference nears, sent out through our newsletter and social media channels.
Who can I contact if I have questions?
We’re happy to help! Send any additional questions to volunteers@storymakersconference.com We want you to feel comfortable and prepared before you arrive.
